Staying Safe Against Fraud While Using Zelle®

Woman on phone
Zelle® is a great way to send money to friends, family and others you trust, right from our app. With Zelle®, money moves directly from your bank account to another person’s bank account, typically arriving in minutes*.

We know getting money to friends and family quickly and safely is important, so we’ve provided some friendly reminders on how to “pay it safe” when you’re sending money with Zelle®.

  • Use Zelle® to send money to friends, family or people you know. Money sent with Zelle® goes directly from your bank account to another person’s bank account and can’t be canceled if the other person is already enrolled with Zelle®. Because of this, you should only send money to people you personally know and trust.
  • Double-check you have the correct contact information for your recipient. If you mistype a recipient’s email address or phone number, the money could go to the wrong person. Double-check the accuracy of your recipient’s information before you send a payment.
  • Don’t use Zelle® if you’re not sure you’ll get what you paid for. For instance, a fraudster may post a rental property that’s in “high demand” on Craigslist or other online marketplaces. The fraudster claims if you send a deposit, they will hold it for you. Once the money is sent, the listing disappears, and the fraudster keeps the money you sent and never meets with you to show you the property. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is.
Remember, if you lose money to a scam, it is extremely hard to recover the lost money. So, take care to ensure you are being diligent. When in doubt, please contact Educators Credit Union, we are here to assist you.

*U.S. checking or savings account required to use Zelle®. Transactions between enrolled users typically occur in minutes.
